During one of my recent workshops, a client talked about a charming Japanese tradition. In Japan, it is customary to serve each other, rather than pouring your own beverage. When drinking in Japan, you need to periodically check your friends' cups and refill their drinks if their cups are getting empty. Likewise, if you would like a refill of your drink, you would first fill everyone's else cup and then someone will fill yours.
What a great way to think about our business relationships. Everyday, we can look around us to see who might need their "cup" refilled. That "cup" could be meeting a targeted prospect, finding the right new employee, looking for someone to outsource an assignment or maybe just getting away from the office for a quick lunch break. Go ahead and help fill your colleagues' cups. And, through the filling of others' cups, our needs in turn will be met.
